Raymond Loretan

Raymond Loretan, 1955, holds a law degree from the University of Fribourg and a degree in European law from the University of Strasbourg. After his appointment as Secretary General of the Swiss Christian Democratic People's Party (PDC), he served for ten years as Swiss Ambassador. Throughout his political and diplomatic career, he developed strong communication, public relations and lobbying expertise, working in close collaboration with high-level government and business decision-makers.

After his graduate studies, this former Chairman of the Swiss Student Society undertook a fellowship at the United Nation Institute for Training and Research in New York and at The Hague and then joined the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in 1983. In the Federal administration he was successively Diplomatic Secretary to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Edouard Brunner, then personal assistant to the Federal Councillor Arnold Koller at the Federal Department of Defense and at the Federal Department of Justice and Police.

In the 1992 referendum on the European Economic Area, Raymond Loretan was Delegate for European and Cross-border Affairs of the Canton of the Valais, an undertaking which culminated in a favourable popular vote. From 1993 to 1997, he was called to Berne as Secretary General of the Swiss Christian Democratic Party. Returning to diplomacy in 1997, he was appointed by the Federal Council as Swiss Ambassador to Singapore and Brunei, and then as the Consul General of Switzerland in New York with the title of Ambassador in 2002. During that time, he conceived and implemented the “swissroots” project.

Raymond Loretan was also President of the Sion Expo Trade Fair and a member of the commission on security policy established by the Defense Minister Adolf Ogi. Initiator of a Valais national exhibition project, he was member of the International Board of the Bid Committee for the SION 2006 Switzerland Winter Olympic Games.

Since January 1st 2012 Raymond Loretan is Chairman of the Swiss Public Broadcasting Corporation (SRG SSR) He is also Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Aevis Holding, a Swiss listed company, Chairman of the board of Genolier Swiss Medical Network Group and of Société Suisse des Explosifs Group. He also sits on the board of Cave Vins des Chevaliers and of the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue.
